How to Learn Spanish Fast
After teaching and learning different languages I know what it takes to learn Spanish fast. I have been in the same situation that you have – you want to learn Spanish as quickly as possible. You may need it for your travels, or maybe you want to be able to speak Spanish fluently. Whether you are in it for the short or long term, the next few paragraphs will help you with exactly how to do this.
Firstly, and I’m sure you’ve read this before, there is no magic pill that you can take that makes you learn Spanish. But there are certain things that you can do to really speed up the process. Let’s find out how!
How Beginners Can Learn Spanish Fast
The best way for beginners to learn Spanish fast is to go to first take an audio/video course or start with Spanish learning software, and then go to a foreign country and immerse yourself for a few weeks or months. The first option is available to everyone while learning in a foreign country isn’t easy to do if you have commitments and is also very expensive.
Buying some software and / or and audio course on the other hand is very reasonable and incredibly effective. Here the three best options out there, and they all come with a FREE TRIAL:
→ Rocket Spanish – Fantastic Software
→ Learning Spanish Like Crazy – Best Audio Course
→ Bueno Entonces – Quirky and Effective Video Series
These courses will give you the basic Spanish that you need to know. They are also a lot of fun and very effective. I’d recommend trying them all out first, and then purchasing the one that you like the most.
Use Your Spanish – For ALL Levels
It is so important to put yourself out there and speak as much Spanish as possible. Once you have taken one of these beginner’s courses, try and find ways to practice your Spanish as much as possible. There are several ways to do this, even if you don’t live in a Spanish speaking country. Here are a couple of ideas:
- Find a language exchange – A language exchange is where you meet with someone either online or in person and spend half of the time speaking in English and half of the time speaking in Spanish. This is probably the easiest way to practice your Spanish naturally. Mylanguageexachange is one of the best places to find a partner online.
- Repeat what you hear and say what you see – Reading and listening to Spanish are the two easy skills to practice as you’re not actually saying anything or constructing sentences. Instead of just reading a Spanish article, read it out loud. Instead of just listening to Spanish, repeat what you hear. The skill of speaking is the hardest to master because, well, it’s the hardest skill! It’s also something that isn’t practiced enough. If you want to be able to speak Spanish, you have to practice speaking.
Make Your Studying Constructive
Learning a language is learning lots of little things. In order to learn Spanish fast you need to be able to know lots of verbs, tenses, how those words are pronounced etc. So, in order to be able to do all of this it is vital that your practice these things. Let’s break this down:
- Practice the verb conjugations – This is a big part of Spanish learning; don’t just learn the conjugations, but practice them. Getting a Spanish verb conjugator is probably one of the best investments you can make when trying to learn Spanish fast. Doing verb drills will dramatically improve your Spanish speaking.
- Make learning part of your routine – This goes back to knowing your circumstances. If you have all day and every day to learn Spanish over the next year then you should try and immerse yourself as much as possible. If you only have thirty minutes a day to learn Spanish then you should try and do something different everyday. But the main point is to make learning Spanish part of your routine and stick to it.
- Stick to your course – If you have started with a Spanish course, then unless it is not very good, stick with it. Many students start a great program, learn a lot from the first couple of units, and then suddenly drop it to buy something else. It’s not the buying of Spanish materials that will help you learn Spanish fast, it is the DOING. You can’t go wrong with any of the courses mentioned, so stick with it and have fun learning!
Some Quick Tips
- Watch and Listen to Spanish – If you are a beginner it is best to focus on Spanish audio that is suited for your level while exposing yourself to a little real Spanish. It really depends on how much time you have to commit to learning. As an intermediate or advanced learner, you should try and listen to as much real Spanish as possible. Find a program that you like and watch whenever you can (this is another way to help you to make Spanish learning part of your routine).
- Write things down and use them – Keep a notebook of all the new vocabulary that you learn and then try to use it the next time you speak. We remember things by repetition and especially by context. Using new vocabulary in conversation will help you remember what you have learned. Go back through this notebook every now and then to test yourself.
- Relax – Try to relax while you are learning. Don’t panic if you say something wrong or if you can’t remember how to say it in Spanish. Just laugh it off and learn from it. Doing some heavy breathing before studying will make sure that you are in the right frame of mind to learn. Another good idea is to play some uplifting and motivating music so that you feel energized to learn.
- Enjoy what you’re doing – Learning Spanish is a journey so it makes sense to enjoy it as much as possible. Don’t see learning Spanish as a means to an end. Instead, enjoy what you’re doing, do the right things, and then you’ll be surprised at how quickly you learn a new language.
So, there is a lot of information here. Just remember that you can learn Spanish fast if you do the right things. Know what it takes to learn a language, stick to it, enjoy it and speak it as much as possible.
