This post is going to talk about how you can improve your ability to conjugate Spanish verbs by using my favorite piece of Spanish software – A Spanish verb conjugator called the Verbarrator.
I want you to think about which verbs you are comfortable conjugating when speaking, you know, the ones that you don’t have to think about and just come out naturally without having to work out the conjugations.
I imagine that you have probably thought about verbs such as “ser,” “estoy,” and “tener.” These three verbs have two things in common: they are all irregular and they are probably the three most common verbs in Spanish. From this we can say that:
“Your ability to conjugate these verbs is down to the fact that you have practiced saying them over and over and over again.”
The number one factor that dictates your ability to conjugate Spanish verbs is how much you have practiced them, especially how much spoken practice you have done. It has little to do with if the verb follows the normal pattern or if it is irregular.
So, to improve your conjugating ability you need to practice. I imagine that with some verbs you have learned the rules and done some exercises in books and online, however, you still have to think about the conjugation when speaking, hesitating and losing confidence.
This post is going to talk about how you can improve your ability to conjugate Spanish verbs by using my favorite piece of Spanish software.
A Spanish verb conjugator is a tool that allows you customize your own Spanish verb drills (crucially with audio and as part of a phrase), practicing conjugations for hundreds of different verbs in different tenses, using different subjects.
This is vitally important if you want to improve your Spanish, as a large part of learning Spanish is learning the different verbs and their conjugations.
Before I started using this tool I had a hard time using the imperative tense in the vosotros form. I needed to do be able to conjugate verbs this way as I was about to start teaching ten year-olds, and this tense is “imperative” for teaching children.
So I set up the verb drills, using the verbs that I knew I was going to need, and started to practice. It was incredible how much I picked up just by doing a few drills, and I went into the lessons with a lot of confidence.
I therefore used this tool to do Spanish verb drills for lots of different tenses. My Spanish started to improve dramatically and I was able to naturally produce the conjugations while speaking for most Spanish verbs and tenses. It was the fact that the conjugator I was using had audio of each and every conjugation that I was able to make such big improvements.
There is only one Spanish Conjugator at the moment that gives you the ability to set up verb drills with audio and built in phrases – The Verbarrator.
This excellent piece of software allows you to pick from 567 verbs in 20 different tenses, and then customize your own drills. There are many different ways to get the most out of this application including: the ability to listen to and repeat Spanish phrases in different tenses through the audio function, choosing verbs by their frequency of use, irregularity, endings etc. Here is what the Verbarrator looks like:
